hehe. The simple things.

Well, exams soon. Next week in fact. Only databases in week 1 of exams, then e-business and project management in the second week. I have a 2 hour exam review session to be at in an hour and it looks like I wont be showering if I expect to make it there on time (and have some toast).

That’ll be the kick-start to my study, actually. I haven’t looked at anything yet. Strangely enough, I’ve been to all of my lectures (well, the ones that the lecturer presented) for databases and project management, so I feel somewhat confident about them. E-business is a different story: I’ve skipped about 8 or 9 of those. Oh well. I get the impression most of the course is similar to things I’ve already studied. I hope so, at least.

It’s been just over 5 weeks since left for her trip. Only 14 weeks to go! Whackadoo. It’s gone pretty fast, admittedly. I still have to reply to her email. I mark them as “personal” in Thunderbird, just so I can pretend I’m important and need to label my mail in case it was audited, or something.

I bought a new video card! Well, a second hand one that hasn’t been used. Yes, I got an nVidia 6800GT. It’s pretty funky (no purple bars of doom like my old busted card), but it seems to heat up when I have all the details running on full at 1280×1024 in the Battlefield 2 demo. It starts getting artifacts and the textures fuck up after a little while, when the card heats up to about 90°. :O I think I may have to plug my case fan back in to try and keep it cool. If only this place wasn’t so fucking dusty, I wouldn’t mind. If I use the fan, all the dust layers around the grill on the front of my case in a nice, thick clump. The grill stops most of it, but fine dust still gets through into the machine and so over time it becomes like an abandoned library inside the case. I must admit it’s kind of fun cleaning it out. There’s something satisfying about dusting with a paintbrush and seeing all the metal become shiny and new again.

Nokia.

Got a call from my mobile phone provider today. They’re changing my plan since I don’t make many phone calls. $59 cap instead of $75, with $200 worth of everything except international calls (and maybe wireless stuff?) included… Or something. Whatever.

Anyway, they’re also giving me a new phone! That means I’m on another 2 year contract, but who cares?

Currently, I have a Nokia 3530, which is rather ugly and a little clunky. It also fails to have much memory on it or any particularly useful features. The new one is the Nokia 5140, for the “outdoorsiness” in me. It has a compass! That’s cool enough for me. I think Frank has that phone, actually. It’s about a year or so old… Maybe more. Meh. I don’t care.

Hmm. It seems to have a radio (!!!! thank christ), torch and thermometer, too. This is like the extension to my long-gone school blazer “survival kit” that I’ve been wanting. Ha! Finally it pays to have answered the phone for once.

http://www.orgburo.com/pofoquiz/pofo.php

Overall, the PoliticsForum quiz considers you a internationalist, free-trade, controlled-market kind of person, who also seems quite Marxist.

These characteristics would put you in the overall category of Marxist. Your natural home at PoliticsForum would be the Communism area.

Below, on this page, is an analysis of the (up to) eight categories that you were sorted into above, and an explanation of how you scored on the eight scales used to determine these categorisations.

The pages following this one show the breakdown of results for all participants on each question. You can freely navigate through the pages by using the hyperlinks in the top right of each page.

Individual vs Social

“The individualist believes that society works best through a focus on individual rights, freedoms, actions and responsibilities. The social thinker believes that the ideal state should focus more upon collective action and take a social approach to rights and responsibilities.”

Individual
Social

You scored 54 out of 100 on a scale of Individual vs Social. This means that politically you are neither more nor less likely to value the need for group actions and group benefit over individual enterprise and benefit.

  • 44% of test takers were more individual than you.
  • 53% of test takers were more social than you.

Theist vs Materialist

“The materialist believes that all objective criteria to influence politics can be reasonably derived without recourse to the divine or the spiritual. The theist believes that spiritual beliefs are important and should influence government policy.”

Theist
Materialist

You scored 60 out of 100 on a scale of Theist vs Materialist. This means that politically you are neither more nor less likely to believe that religion and spirituality are superstitions that should not inform political debate.

  • 47% of test takers were more theist than you.
  • 51% of test takers were more materialist than you.

Big Government vs Small Government

“The big government advocate believes that governments should be responsible for regulating a wide array of social practices, even what might be considered personal decisions such as abortion, euthanasia, children’s education and births. A small government advocate thinks that, wherever possible, these issues should be up to individuals or companies to direct.”

Big Gov
Small Gov

You scored 56 out of 100 on a scale of Big Government vs Small Government. This means that politically you are neither more nor less likely to believe that government should keep out of legislating social policies, leaving such decisions to individuals.

  • 44% of test takers were more big government than you.
  • 53% of test takers were more small government than you.

Nationalist vs Internationalist

“The nationalist believes in the sovereign rule of nation states, particularly his or her own. The internationalist believes that there should be more important international fora and perhaps, ultimately, international government.”

National
International

You scored 68 out of 100 on a scale of Nationalist vs Internationalist. This means that politically you are more likely to favour international bodies over national ones.

  • 68% of test takers were more nationalist than you.
  • 30% of test takers were more internationalist than you.

Protectionist vs Free Trader

“The protectionist believes in barriers against free trade most probably due to a belief that this is in his or her country’s interests. The free trader rejects such notions, believing that the system ultimately suffers when tariffs, subsidies and other obstacles to free trade persist.”

Protection
Free-Trade

You scored 69 out of 100 on a scale of Protectionist vs Free Trader. This means that politically you are more likely to favour free trade over protectionist policies.

  • 73% of test takers were more protectionist than you.
  • 26% of test takers were more pro free trade than you.

Absolutist vs Non-Absolutist

“The absolutist believes that either a divine presence or scientific laws provide absolute truths about the world, which can and should be applied in practise. The non-absolutist may be either a relativist, or simply someone who is more pragmatic.”

Absolute
Non-Absolute

You scored 59 out of 100 on a scale of Absolutist vs Non Absolutist. This means that politically you are neither more nor less likely to believe that there is an absolute truth that may guide your ideological beliefs.

  • 54% of test takers were more absolutist than you.
  • 41% of test takers were more non-absolutist than you.

Controlled Market vs Liberal Market

“Both of these categories assume a capitalist system. Assuming this system, the controlled market believer holds that government should intervene in regulating a nation’s economy: wage laws, environmental standards, privatised industries and workplace relations policy. A liberal market thinker believes that such regulation is unnecessary and often counter-productive.”

Controlled
Liberal

You scored 28 out of 100 on a scale of Controlled Market vs Liberal Market. This means that politically you are more likely to believe that there is need for government regulation of industry.

  • 29% of test takers were more controlled market thinkers than you.
  • 69% of test takers were more liberal market thinkers than you.

Marxist vs Non-Marxist

“This scale purports to show to what extent you follow the thought and teachings of Marx. Marxists tend to be scientific, materialist and revolutionary, believe in class struggle and the laws of historical and dialectic materialism.”

Marxist
Non-Marxist

You scored 38 out of 100 on a scale of Marxist vs Non-Marxist. This means that politically you are more likely to follow the philosophies of Marx.

  • 23% of test takers were more Marxist than you.
  • 76% of test takers were more non-Marxist than you.

Braggart.

Braggart
You are 85% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 42% Brutal, and 71% Arrogant.
You are the Braggart! Like Muhammad Ali, you would surely tell everyone
that you are “The Greatest” whilst bragging incessantly about your
intelligence, your skills, and your abilities. You tend to be a thinker
rather than a feeler, and combined with your extroversion and
arrogance, this makes you someone who probably just LOVES to brag about
his accomplishments. Despite this, however, you are a very gentle,
tender person and truly care about others’ feelings. You just happen to
care more about yourself. Unlike Ali, of course, you are rather
rational as opposed to emotional, and you are also much more gentle.
But his arrogance and extroversion best reflect the most visible
aspects of your personality. Your personality defect is the fact that
you are extremely overconfident, extroverted, and perhaps rather
lacking in emotions. YOU ARE THE GREATEST! Or so you keep telling
yourself every night, in hopes that eventually everyone else on the
planet will agree. Well, sorry, we probably won’t.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.

2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Bitch-Slap.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Haughty Intellectual, and the Capitalist Pig.

*

*

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you
could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42%
Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is
close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well.
Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can
determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored
near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

Score.

Corby sentenced to 20 years in gaol. I changed it to gaol from jail.

Well, I think we all saw that coming. Bring on the next decade of appeals.

This really pissed me off, though:

Also outside the court, Glen Jeffers, a family friend, made an impassioned plea to the Indonesian president, linking the case to Australia’s tsunami aid to the country.

“We’ll continue to fight until an innocent girl is set free to live and enjoy her life,” the man said, reading from a statement.

“President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, when Indonesia was struck by the tsunami, Australia gave aid.

“Nine Australians gave the ultimate – their lives – in a helicopter crash on the island helping Indonesians.

“Australia and Indonesia have become good friends. For a friendship to grow there must be giving from both friends

“Mr President, we have seen enough innocent lives wasted in the past year. Please sir, let’s not waste another innocent life.

“All Australia asks is that you give Schapelle back to us. Schapelle is innocent.”

I don’t think I even have to explain why.

Oddly, I couldn’t find the headlines on any of my other news RSS feeds apart from the Australian Yahoo headlines. Oh well.

At least Howard got it right.

Makes you wonder how the tourism industry will go for Indonesia in the next few years. I bet there’s a lot of bitter Aussies. About 98% of the population, if you believe channel 9’s “worm”. Didn’t channel 9 broadcast the verdict, too? Geez. Then again, I suppose the ratings were sensational. Hurrah for advertising revenue.

MSACCESS.

Can fucking die.

Jesus Christ.

I finally finished most of my assignment. There’s only one thing I couldn’t get working (and one or two minor bits). Ironically enough, that was the most critical part, yet it’s only worth 1/8th of the overall mark. Big shit. That part still works, just not well. Everything else is ok, although the interface is a bit ugly.

Yes, I had to make a database for uni. I left it til the last minute because I thought we’d been given a lot more to work from than we had. Bugger.

A whole day gone for just 10% of a course. I didn’t really learn anything, either. Access has the worst fucking help system, and its interface, considering it’s a “professional” application, is even worse than the one I created.

Bleh. Whatever. I just have to show it off tomorrow and that’ll be that. I also have to get up and go to my Project Management lecture. Wowee.

I have to start going to my other lectures. It’s nearing crunch time.

Poor old Nick is snoring on the futon and the clacky keys on this keyboard are waking him up. Oh, yeah, he didn’t die. His girlfriend became ill after she had her drink spiked at the Bachelor & Spinster ball they went to on the weekend (why a couple would go to that, I don’t know). He spent an extra day up there and had no reception on his mobile. Dramatic.

My video card’s back on the purple bars again. Stupid video memory. I’d take it back and get it replaced, but I’m lazy and don’t really care. I’m kind of used to having purple/pink bars and lines all over the screen. That’s how long it’s been happening and how long I’ve put up with it. Woot.

I saw Star Wars on Tuesday night with Scott and Nick. It wasn’t bad. Quite good, really. I enjoyed it much, much more than episodes 1 and 2. Yes, I sound like everyone else who’s reviewed it. I guess that’s consensus for you. There’s one scene where Obi Wan is watching Anakin slap up Padme at the end, with his hands on his hips as he stands above the stairs coming down from the ship… Words cannot describe how hilarious his pose was. Scott and I both cracked up simultaneously, then looked at each other in the theatre, then started laughing again. It’s fun to be tainted.

Lara Croft goes bust

In an attempt to appeal to more female players the creators of computer game icon Lara Croft have re-vamped her image to remove one of her most prominent and remarked- upon features – her generous bust.

In the soon-to-be-released “Tomb Raider: Legend”, the eighth title to feature Croft, her DD-size bust has been reduced to a more modest C-cup and some of her more revealing outfits have been ditched, the report said.

Bad luck for all those low-polygon porn freaks out there.

In other news: I had a pie from Shakespeare’s Jesters (note the distinct lack of an apostrophe). Vegetarian curry with a side of their magnificent chips. I’m very disturbed at their lack of an apostrophe in their name. Fuckers. At least the food is still good.

Uni work is in the second wave of “must complete ASAP” for the semester. That’s the good wave because it means exams are coming soon and that means holidays. Huzzah. Cramming time is yet to be scheduled.

Speaking of schedules, I have to get out of work on the 10th of June for Mary’s Katie’s party. Yes, she changed her name last year. I still prefer Mary. Hmm.

Our “temporary flatmate”, Nick, (or G_o_L_i_A_t_H as he prefers to be called) is yet to arrive back from his weekend up in Newcastle rooting his girlfriend. We haven’t heard anything from him and all his stuff is still on the floor near the kitchen, along with his computer. I hope he’s alright. He hasn’t been answering his phone. His mum hasn’t rung us, either. She knows our phone number so I’d assume if she knew something had happened we’d have been called by her at least. Then again if something’s happened on the way home on Sunday night, maybe no one knows about it. I’m avoiding thinking about the possibilities until I hear more. He wasn’t at work today, too.

Merge.

Well, I’ve decided to manually (for lack of a better/any other option) copy all my LiveJournal posts over to blogspot.

I’ll do a few months at a time. It’s not too painful, I suppose. It’s a bit annoying adjusting all the dates/times for each entry, but oh well.
